Kate's Story

Kate's Story

Description: This story of a poor working-class family begins in the squalid setting of Ancoats, Manchester, in 1897. When 11-year-old Kate's father dies of consumption, the family are catapulted into destitution and the workhouse - the horrible conditions and the brutality of the overseers are graphically described, as is the sense of shame the inmates felt at being there. Kate is fortunate to go to an industrial school where she learns the skills she will need for a life in service. At 14 she finds a position as a maid in the Lamport-Smythe household where she stays for five years, enduring the long hours of the 'downstairs' life and the unwelcome attentions of the Lamport-Smythes' son. Kate's only desire is to unite her family under one roof and return to the loving family life she had known before her father's death. This she manages to do, but gradually she becomes disillusioned with her mother and her stepfather's drinking and decides to make her own happiness. This is a lively tale of homespun charm - the voice is not educated, the story in no way dramatic, but it does have an almost documentary feel of the time, with references to the suffragette movement, the death of the Queen and the First World War - and just how these developments affected the lives of the poor. The story is based on the real experiences of the author's mother, and this gives a moving sense of authenticity to the book.

Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow

Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow

Description: Over one hundred years since it was first published ‘Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow’ addresses subjects which are still relevant today – perhaps more so! Being hard up, being in the blues and being in love are just some aspects of the human condition on which Jerome K. Jerome reflects in his unique whimsical fashion. These insights are not given for the benefit of our education however, for as he says in his introduction, “This book would not elevate a cow. I cannot consciously recommend it for any useful purpose whatsoever. All I can suggest is, that when you get tired of reading ‘the best hundred books’ you may take this up for half an hour. It will be a change!”
